Abstract

Sustainable tourism aims to ensure a balance between social, economic and ecological aspects at the same time, which has positive implications for sustainable development of local communities. Sustainable experiences, therefore, are great contributors to enjoyment of both visitors and residents, as it is a type of tourism that is rooted in the territory and based on the enhancement of authenticity and local identity. In this sense, tourism in rural areas offers an ideal framework for the planning and practice of sustainable activities deeply rooted in the land, as is the case for gastronomy, tracks or artisan gardens. Within this framework, this article shows examples of sustainable practices in Selwyn District, in the region of Canterbury, New Zealand.
